U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson on May 10, again said he wants to go to Fort Knox to verify the state of the U.S. gold reserves, saying he wants to check whether the gold is still being stored in the vault. Fort Knox currently stores about 147 million ounces of gold, roughly 59% of the United States’ total gold holdings, and the last publicly disclosed audit took place in 1974.
According to the interview report, when Sharyl Attkisson asked about the progress of the Fort Knox audit, Trump said, “I’d like to find a time to go to Fort Knox and take a look,” adding, “I’d like to see if there’s really gold there. I believe there definitely is.” In this interview, Trump did not announce any formal audit, inspection, or a specific timetable for a visit.
According to public reporting, the desire to conduct this visit was first jointly raised by Trump and Elon Musk in February 2025, and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was also involved at the time, but no further action announcements have followed since then.
According to U.S. Department of the Treasury data, Fort Knox’s vault in Kentucky currently stores about 147 million ounces of gold, roughly 59% of the United States’ official total gold holdings. Based on publicly available records, the last publicly disclosed audit involving external observers occurred in 1974; since then, audit work has mainly consisted of annual internal checks carried out by the Treasury itself.
In February 2025, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that annual internal reviews confirmed that each gold bar has been properly recorded.
According to public information from the U.S. Congress, Representative Thomas Massie has introduced HR 3795, titled the “2025 Gold Reserve Transparency Act,” which aims to conduct a comprehensive independent audit of the U.S. gold reserves. As of now, the bill remains under committee consideration and has not yet undergone a floor vote.
In his statement, Massie said: “President Trump said he wants to go to Fort Knox to ‘confirm whether the gold reserves are sufficient.’ This bill will provide the comprehensive information disclosure that President Trump is seeking.”
